Wise Voters in Oregon That Oregon voters are probably the wisest in the nation is made manifest by the fact that on May 16, 2000 by a 3-to-1 margin, Oregon's electorate defeated "Measure 81," a ballot proposition that would have empowered state legislators, who of course receive thousands and thousands of campaign contribution dollars fom the insurance industry and the doctors' lobby, to limit the amount of monetary damages plaintiffs in medical malpractice and other tort lawsuits might receive. It is probably too much to expect that the legislature of California and its governor would "get the message" from the overwhelming majority view of our northern neighbors. --Nathaniel J. Friedman
